Do you know what are the effects of Biodiesel in Algae and Terrestrial plants?
I am doing an experiment for biology, my aim is to study the effect of Biodiesel on different plants, that’s to say how it affects each, wether it contaminates it or not.
I have been talking about it with my biology teacher. She says this fuel may damage water plants such as Algae by releasing aqueous solutions hence preventing the plant from reciving enough light to carry on with its photosynthetic process. Do you know if this has already been prooved? And, do you know how Biodiesel may damage common terrestrial plants. I have been looking about it everywhere but I can’t find it.

Diesel and also biodiesel are mixtures of straight chain and polycyclic hydrocarbons. (including heterotrophic ones). Many of these chemicals are carcinogenic and others are teratogenic (causing reproductive defects). A great number of them will cause plant damage by destroying essential enzymes that disrupts the cell’s functioning and kills the plant. Others will interfere with intra plant wall or membrane diffusion or transfer of ions, gasses into the plant.They can interfere with the export of plant waste. Most of the plants will die, if not all of them.
